When Starting Your Fitness Journey, Should You Go It Alone Or Hire A Personal Trainer?

Sep 21, 2022 | Mobile Personal Training

Working out at the gym, joining a group fitness class, or even following an at-home video are all great ways to get fit. However, many people struggle to make those fitness routines a permanent part of their lives—and that’s where personal trainers come in. Working with a trainer can be a challenging and rewarding experience.

A good personal trainer can help you reach your goals faster than if you were going at it alone. But is hiring one worth the cost? Let’s take a look at why you might want to hire a personal trainer. As well as when it might not be worth it.

When Hiring A Personal Trainer Can Help

If you’re new to exercise, having a personal trainer can help you navigate the world of fitness. A  personal trainer can show you how to use equipment in or out of the gym, create a sustainable fitness routine, and design a fitness program that’s right for you.

Similarly, if you’re returning to exercise after a long break. Having a trainer can help you ease your way back in. And if you’re training for a specific event, like a triathlon or marathon, it might be helpful to have a mobile personal trainer. To help you focus on the types of exercises you need to do based on the types of activities you’re doing.

When It’s Probably Not Worth Hiring A Personal Trainer

An experienced personal trainer should always be able to add value, offer a new perspective, and challenge you in ways that you’re not used to. However, a common theme that comes up in my experience is people who are looking to be motivated externally, I.e. by a trainer.

Motivation is certainly something a trainer can help in the short term. But hiring one isn’t going to take you from not wanting to train to be a person who can’t wait to step into the gym.

If the only reason you’re looking to hire a mobile personal trainer is that you want to be motivated by them, I would first suggest that you take a much longer look at your goals for getting fit and see if it is something that is truly important to you. If it is then that should go a long way towards motivating you to take action.

The Benefits Of Working With A Personal Trainer

A good personal trainer can help you design an effective and efficient workout that’s tailored to your specific fitness goals. A trainer can help you create a program that’s right for you, taking into account any health conditions you may have and your current fitness level.

They can also make sure you’re doing your exercises safely, helping you avoid injury. Personal trainers can help you stay accountable and make sure you get your workouts in regularly.

The Downsides Of Working With A Personal Trainer

If you find a trainer you really click with, it can be well worth the cost, but it’s important to pick the right person for you. When it comes to hiring a personal trainer or a mobile personal trainer, make sure you know what you’re looking for.

  • How often do you want to work out?
  • What types of exercises do you want to focus on? How much do you want to spend?

Working with a trainer can also mean that you have less control over your fitness routine, so make sure to communicate what you want out of the experience.

Bottom line

If you’re just starting out, getting fit, or returning to a regular fitness routine, hiring a personal trainer can be a great investment. They can help you ease into a regular fitness routine, design a program that’s right for you, and keep you accountable.

Keep in mind, though, that hiring a personal trainer is only one piece of the fitness puzzle. You also need to put in the work to make those workouts effective. For the best results, commit to your fitness routine for the long term.

Are You Looking For A Challenge?

Maybe you want to run a marathon or complete a triathlon. Whatever the challenge is, a personal trainer can help get you there. A mobile personal trainer can build the appropriate program to prepare you for the challenge…they can also add varying progressions to help you get ready for the big day. A trainer can also push you with the right intensity, without causing injury.

If you’re a beginner or you just want to tackle a new challenge then your first item of business should be hiring a trainer to make sure you’re on the right path.
